The fact that salt was ever able to be extracted in Lüneburg is due to a salt deposit lying close beneath the surface of Lüneburg's Old Town.
The Hanseatic League is synonymous with a particular period of European history when trade was strong and there was a large merchant community. A time when travellers looked out for each other on land and at sea and took care of economic affairs.
